When I import my own av so I can use it to construct clothing, the original avastar tpose seems fine but the imported av using the tpose squishes the upper legs together to an extent that they are overlapping in areas and the model cannot be used for clothing as there is no space in between the upper legs. I tried fixing this of course and it works while in object or pose mode but as soon as I go to edit mode the legs again close in and overlap, leaving no working space. Is there a way to alter the tpose just a bit to fit the uploaded avatar better and use the altered version in edit mode?

In avastar, if you try to freeze selected on the legs and lower torso of the mesh, the resulting frozen mesh has problems with the positioning of the knees and the shape of the legs in general.
